LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel joined in her 11th lawsuit against the Donald Trump administration, the latest being Friday in legal action opposing federal dollars being withheld from schools that continue to practice Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies.

Trump has signed multiple executive orders ending what his administration has deemed discriminatory practices such as DEI.

On April 3, the U.S. Department of Education sent a letter stating that school districts and institutes of higher learning that continued with DEI practices could lose their federal funding. Michigan’s K-12 schools received $2.27 billion in federal funding in 2024-25.

“That the federal government would strangle our schools and shutter classrooms to achieve their political attacks on DEI programming is appalling,” said Nessel in a press release. “Our educational agencies cannot be expected to comply with legally incoherent demands that undercut the 1964 Civil Rights Act, particularly when our schools are not in violation of Title VI and have annually certified compliance with this law.”

Earlier this month, Nessel referred to Trump as a fascist.

“Why I refuse to normalize this president,” Nessel wrote April 10 while linking to an article from a news organization about her preoccupation with Trump. “Appeasement is not workable strategy with a fascist.”
