LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The state task force on gun violence released a report that looks to strengthen the state’s laws on Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO), often referred to as red-flag gun laws. The law allows guns to be confiscated from people suspected of being at risk to injure themselves or others.
The Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force filed its first report this week.

The recommendations include requiring law enforcement to serve the red-flag orders, requiring that the ERPOs show up on national information centers so they will show up during background checks and creating a system that alerts law enforcement when a citizen has filed an Extreme Risk Protection Order. The task force also recommends requiring law enforcement to serve ERPOs.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the red-flag law legislation in May 2023.
Nearly three out of every four Extreme Risk Protection Orders requested were awarded by the courts in 2024, as Michigan News Source previously reported. There were 391 ERPO complaints filed in 2024 and the courts issued 287 orders.
In February, State Rep. James DeSana, (R-Carleton), introduced legislation to repeal the red-flag law. His bill was referred to committee.
