In a post on X, Cox said “Eight years of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has made Michigan weaker, poorer, and less free.”

Cox served as Michigan’s Attorney General from 2003 through 2010. His entry into the race makes him the fourth Republican. Other GOP hopefuls include U.S. Rep. John James, Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, and Anthony Hudson. Hudson’s campaign website says he is  “running for Governor to eliminate property and state income taxes, demand transparency and accountability, and return power to local communities where it belongs.”

Democrats hoping to earn Michigan’s top job include Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. Gov. Whitmer cannot run again due to term limits.
