DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The city of Detroit is spending millions of dollars on its government access cable TV programming but some of the channels are getting just thousands of views a year.

A report to the City Council showed that views for three of the channels in 2024 ranged from as low as 1,608 views that year to 5,168. The fourth government channel that broadcasts the City Council meetings had the most at 108,467 views in 2024. The city spent $3.2 million on its cable TV division in 2024.

Viewers can watch Detroit’s Public, Educational and Government access channels via AT&T U-Verse (channel 99) and Comcast Cable (channels 10, 21, 22 and 68). The city stated these channels are required by federal law to be available to any cable service subscriber.

Channel 21 is the “neighborhoods channel” and had 3,302 views in 2024. Channel 68 is the “public access channel” and had 5,168 views in 2024. And the city’s “educational access” Channel 22 had just 1,608 views last year.

“Media Services is actively working to showcase a diverse range of content created by local film artists across multiple dedicated channels to expand and increase viewership,” the city stated in a memo.
