BAY CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Bay City Commissioner Andrea B. Obershaw told the city’s police they should be focused on solving crime committed by “privileged white people” instead of addressing immigration matters.

“We need to be informed of white crime,” Obershaw said during the March 17 meeting in a video published by Off the Press. “Immigrants are not doing these crimes. These are privileged white people that have done these crimes in the past month. Not immigrants. We don’t need to deputize these officers for immigration. This is white crime. Not immigrants.”

The city’s resolution.

Obershaw made her comments during a debate over how the city would handle immigration under the Donald Trump administration.

The City Commission passed a resolution that stated it would not help federal officials on immigration issues unless legally forced to cooperate.

The original resolution stated, ” … any perception that local police are acting as federal immigration agents undermines this trust and reduces community cooperation. … the City of Bay City affirms that no city officer, department, or employee shall be deputized by any federal agency for the explicit purpose of enforcing federal immigration law.”

The resolution added, “No city department, agency, officer, or employee shall use city resources, including but not limited to funds, personnel, or equipment, for the sole purpose of enforcing federal immigration laws, except where explicitly required by federal or state law or by court order. No city agency, law enforcement department, or employee shall collect, store, or disclose any information regarding an individual’s immigration status, national origin, or other personal identifying information for the purpose of immigration enforcement, unless required by federal or state law of [sic] by court order.”

A possible censure for Obershaw.

Obershaw recently made news March 3 when she verbally chastised fellow commissioner Stephen Prince during a commission meeting. Obershaw was upset she could be censured by the City Commission for an online attack she made against Prince, according to WNEM. Obershaw left the meeting with a police escort after saying, “If my president can say f*** you, and you ain’t nothing but a little b****, I’m going to say it exactly the way I feel.”

In December 2023, Obershaw was convicted of domestic violence, a misdemeanor, after she hit her sister while at a family residence, according to WJRT.
