DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Detroit legend Miguel Cabrera retired last season but has found a way to stay with the Tigers as a special assistant. He started his new role on Wednesday in Florida at Joker Marchant Stadium for Spring Training.
According to the MLB.com story, manager A.J. Hinch says, “He’ll do a lot of different things. I think he’s going to be around first base, helping Malloy and Colt in their transitions, and then he was in the batting cage this morning.”

Cabrera’s experience at first base with the Tigers will help both Malloy and Colt as helps them with their footwork and adjustment to that part of the field. Keith played second base last year and is batting .273 this spring and Malloy was an outfielder batting .310 currently.
Detroit is coming off a remarkable post-season run, dethroning Houston in the ALDS and then playing for the AL Championship. They return most of the team but will have to figure out how to replace Cabrera’s leadership in the dugout.
Commenting on seeing the team this spring, Cabrera said, “Guys look good. They look strong. They don’t look like babies anymore. They have a good chance to win this year.”
Detroit opens the 2025 season on March 27 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. Their home opener will be on Friday, April 4, against the Chicago White Sox.
