TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The United States is gearing up to hit the big 2-5-0 on July 4, 2026, and Americans are already buzzing about how to throw a party that’s the cat’s meow. America250.org is rallying the troops to make this semiquincentennial a celebration for the ages. Think fireworks, flags, and freedom ringing from sea to shining sea.

President Donald J. Trump has signed an Executive Order to make the event “a grand celebration” establishing the “White House Task Force on Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday.” The Chair, Trump himself, will work hand-in-hand with VP Vance along with many of the department secretaries to make the event a spectacular one.

Some in Michigan will be getting ready to go full steam ahead for America’s 250th birthday with the help of the state who is giving grants to local governments, tribal governments and non-profit history organizations for the upcoming celebration.

Michigan has their own website for the event called “America250MI” proclaiming “America250MI, Michigan’s Committee for the United States Semiquincentennial, was established by Governor Whitmer in 2020 to encourage, advance, and foster the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution’s role in Michigan’s history, and the impact these, and other historic events had on the people of Michigan’s past, present, and future.”

The main goals of the America250MI committee are to “Support and promote local 250th anniversary commemorative events, arts, preservation, heritage tourism, and educational programming by telling Michigan’s stories from many points of view.”

What is your town planning?

With the 250th anniversary of the United States approaching, some communities are beginning to prepare for the celebration already. In Grand Traverse County, however, discussions about the event have not yet taken place, and it is not currently on the county’s radar. Officials have yet to begin planning their 2026 budget, which may account for the lack of focus on the milestone.

Grand Traverse County may not be alone in this. Many local governments may not yet be aware of the event or think it’s too far off to start planning for the upcoming semiquincentennial. However, with state grants available, now may be the time for communities to start discussions. Residents interested in seeing local participation in the celebration are encouraged to reach out to their county or city officials to bring attention to the event. Local civic organizations, including the American Legion, veterans groups, and other community organizations, can also explore opportunities to plan events for the celebration.

The countdown is on.

With ample time to plan – whether through local government, a civic organization, or a backyard BBQ – there’s no reason to miss out on this historic celebration. This once-in-a-lifetime event is the perfect opportunity to deck the town in red, white, and blue.
