ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – As the no. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, Michigan is eyeing the Championship under first-year head coach Dusty May. UM is no. 22 in the nation and will play in the quarterfinal on Friday at 9:00 p.m. against Purdue or USC.

“Look around the country and you study the recent success of teams and a lot of them have gone through a stretch like we did late in their seasons,” said May. “It’s those teams that found ways to regroup and respond and knock down those big shots and play with a high level of confidence.”

Michigan has won three Big Ten Tournament championships in 1998, 2017, 2018) and is the lowest seed (no. 8) to win the tournament (2017). The Wolverines are the no. 3 seed after being the Big Ten runners-up but lost the tiebreaker to Maryland.

The Wolverines must win three games in three days to make a championship happen. If they win on Friday, they will face Maryland or Illinois on Saturday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. The Big Ten Championship game is at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Roddy Gayle, Jr. says, “It takes extreme toughness to win three games in three days. We have a ton of veteran guys that have been in this scenario. To win three games in three days takes a different type of resilience and I feel like that is something our guys have.”

Michigan split their regular-season series with Purdue, winning their last meeting on February 11 in Crisler Arena, 75-73. In their only meeting this year on the West Coast, Michigan won 94-75 over USC on January 4.

Vladislav Goldin will lead the Wolverines into the tournament as an All-Big Ten first-team selection from the media and second-team by the coaches. Danny Wolf was then a second-team selection by both the coaches and media.

Michigan’s trek to a championship begins on Friday night on the Big Ten Network.
