WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin had her work cut out for her during her party’s Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.
Slotkin’s response to Trump’s nearly two hour speech came after the sergeant at arms tossed out Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) for being disruptive at the beginning of the speech. Most of the Democratic female representatives wore pink and held up signs while Trump spoke. They did not stand or clap when Trump introduced the family members of murdered college student Laken Riley or slain 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray. Democrats continued to sit on their hands when Trump named 13-year-old brain cancer survivor DJ Daniel a Secret Service agent.
Did Slotkin listen to the speech?

Slotkin offered nothing new in her response, repeating typical Democratic party talking points. After bragging about her service in the CIA, she said “prices are too high and the government needs to be more responsive to [people’s] needs.” This comment referred to the high cost of groceries which ballooned during the Biden administration and are spilling over into the first few months of Trump’s time in office.
In addition, Slotkin trotted out the tired “tax cuts for billionaires only” narrative. Trump called for tax cuts up and down the spectrum, but Slotkin mentioned America needs a “tax system that’s fair to people not billionaires” before quickly moving on.
She also stuck with her party’s pushback against Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
“Change doesn’t have to be chaotic or make us less safe” Slotkin said, referring to the massive cuts Musk has made over the past seven weeks. Those cuts include redundant bureaucracy and empty offices.
Slotkin still mum on no-show vote.
In Tuesday night’s response, Slotkin called on Americans to hold all politicians, including herself, accountable. However, Slotkin put her cognitive dissonance and that of her party on display.
Michigan’s junior senator has not communicated with her constituents about why she did not cast a vote Monday night for the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. Fellow U.S. Senator Gary Peters voted “no.” Neither Senator has responded to Michigan News Source about the reasoning behind their positions. All other Democrat Senators voted “no” as well.
