LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer finally found the time during her overseas “trade mission” to address the critical approaching deadline affecting Michigan’s restaurant workers.

A spokesperson for Gov. Whitmer said she called House Speaker Matt Hall (R-Richland Township) and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids) and told them to keep working on a deal. Whitmer also said they can pass a short-term extension through July 1.

Whitmer’s office said it has fielded concerns about the Feb. 21 deadline that will implement new minimum wage and sick leave requirements for restaurants and eliminate the tipped wage. She said she is open to a bipartisan deal. The House passed two bills last week, and the Senate is considering its own version this week.

Hall said in a statement in that he is committed to finding the right solution that supports and protects small businesses. “I have come to the table in good faith, trying to meet Senate Democrats halfway, because I believe we can achieve a balanced approach that helps hardworking Michiganders without forcing a big part of our small business community to close their doors for good.” Hall also emphasized, “We can get this done now – it’s well past time for Senate Democrats to meet us halfway, accept my offer, and solve this crisis before next week’s deadline.”

Brinks has not issued a statement.
