DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The Detroit Public Schools Community District is modifying its budget to account for an additional $63 million in spending for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
Personnel costs represent the biggest expense. Those costs jumped $31 million from $801.4 million to $832.4 million. Personnel costs (which include salary, bonuses, taxes, healthcare and retirement costs) account for 70% of the total $1.19 billion in spending.

The district said costs were higher because of retroactive salary and bonus payments the district made in December 2024 due to bargaining agreements with the school district’s unions.
The report was provided to the school board for its Feb. 12 meeting.
In October 2020, Detroit Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said he wanted to make the teachers in his district “the highest paid in the country.” Average teacher pay in the district has increased from $57,977 in 2018 to $73,211 in 2023.
