LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Big Lots, which filed for bankruptcy in September 2024, will keep five Michigan stores open as part of its restructuring process.

The Ohio-based retailer, which filed for bankruptcy in September 2024, has seen its total number of U.S. locations drop from 1,392 at the start of 2024 to 872.

Court documents filed February 3rd in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware list stores in Burton, Flint, Port Huron, Shelby Township, and Southgate among 200 locations expected to remain open. The list of stores was provided by Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, the Boston-based firm handling Big Lots’ asset liquidation.

Variety Wholesalers, a North Carolina-based retailer, is set to take over the leases for these locations. Despite the transition, Variety plans to continue operating the stores under the Big Lots name, as reported by the Lansing State Journal.

The company has already closed 11 stores across the state, including locations in Lansing, Ypsilanti, and Holland. Four more—in Benton Harbor, Livonia, Saginaw, and Taylor—are scheduled to close.

Earlier this year, 16 Michigan store leases were offered for sale, but only Southgate made the list of stores expected to continue operations.

Any objections to the transfer of leases to Variety Wholesalers must be filed with the court by February 18.
