GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The city of Grand Rapids collected record-level of city taxes in 2024, according to the annual report it recently released.
The city collected $136.8 million local income tax and $55.4 million in property taxes in 2024. That total of $192.2 million is a 31% increase from 2021, which suffered due to being in the midst of the pandemic. Overall, the city had $358.7 million in total revenues, about $48 million more than the previous year.

The federal pandemic relief has played a large role in the city’s financial revival. For example, Grand Rapids received $31.3 million in federal money in 2024. By comparison, the city averaged $8.4 million a year in federal money from 2015 through 2020.
In 2021, the city’s expenses exceeded revenues by $5.1 million, as the pandemic hurt municipalities across the country. But in the three years since, the city had revenues exceed expenses by an average of $29.4 million a year.
With the extra money, Grand Rapids has been hiring more workers. The city added 50 jobs in 2024, giving it 1,790 full-time positions citywide, or 179 more full-time employees than in 2015.
The city added 23 full-time jobs added to the fire department and nine positions to the police department. That accounted for 64% of the new jobs added among 30 different departments in 2024.
The population in Grand Rapids has increased from 193,793 in 2015 to 196,608 in 2024.
