TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The median home price listing in Traverse City is $440,000, according realtor.com. The average teacher salary for that city was $69,661 in 2022-23.

Deeming affordable housing an issue in retaining teachers, the Traverse City Area Public Schools received an update this week on a project to make housing more affordable for educators in that area of the state.

The project will provide 90 affordable units in Blair Township, about 10 miles south of Traverse City, according to the Michigan Education Association. The project hopes to break ground sometime in 2025 or 2026.The project has received $5 million in state funding from the 2025 budget. It would rent out units exclusively to pre-K to K-12 educators and education support staff from Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Northwest Education Services and Traverse City Area Public Schools, according to school district documents.

“We continue to collaborate with our educational partners on the project, and each step provides more valuable insight on how to best navigate the process and the legality of ownership, operations, and logistics, etc.,” said Ginger Smith, a spokeswoman for the school district, to Michigan News Source.
