English Learners now make up 7% of all K-12 students enrolled in public schools. But it is a much bigger issue for some school districts. For example, 45% of the students at Dearborn’s public school district are English Learners as are 62% of the students at Hamtramck’s public school district.

The state had 51,465 English Learners in 2007-08.

The state of Michigan divvied up $39.8 million in 2023-24 to help school districts deal with English Learners. But the left-leaning Education Trust-Midwest that advocates for more spending on education stated in 2023 that it would cost about $500 million a year to properly education English Learners in this state.
