LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The 103rd Michigan Legislature gaveled in on Wednesday, and with it came a Republican majority in the House.
One of those Republican lawmakers isn’t wasting any time. State Rep. Sarah Lightner (R-Springport) is sounding the alarm again, calling for Michigan to take back taxpayer money given to Ford for its BlueOval electric vehicle battery plant in Marshall. The Chinese company, which is partnering with Ford on the project, landed on the U.S. Department of Defense’s 1260H list this week. In a press release, the Department of Defense stressed the importance of updating the list of “Chinese military companies.” It said it will continue “highlighting and countering the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) Military-Civil Fusion strategy [that ensures] it can acquire advanced technologies and expertise developed by PRC companies, universities, and research programs that appear to be civilian entities.”

Rep. Lightner said the developments go along with what she’s been saying for months. “Projects like this require much stricter oversight,” she said. “We must have safeguards in place to protect taxpayers from financial risks and national security threats.”
Lightner’s efforts include returning $725.3 million to SOAR and putting infrastructure money invested in the Marshall plant back into the state’s general fund. She’s also calling for mandated audits of the SOAR fund.
“Michigan cannot afford to gamble with taxpayer money on a project linked to a company flagged for ties to the Chinese military,” Lightener said.
