LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The average annual pay for a Michigan public school teacher ranked 21st overall nationwide at $67,011.

California led the nation at $95,160 and Florida was last at $53,332, according to the most recent data released by the National Education Association for the 2022-23 school year.

But in Michigan, teacher salaries can vary greatly district by district.

For example, the average teacher salary at Macomb County’s Warren Consolidated Schools was $93,168 in 2022-23 while it was $57,593 in Niles public schools in Berrien County.

A teacher with 10 years of experience and a Master’s degree would have a base salary of $55,350 at Benton Harbor’s public school district. A teacher with the same credentials would make $64,036 at the bordering St. Joseph’s school district and that same teacher would have a base salary of $76,581 at Troy’s school district.

School funding doesn’t necessarily dictate teacher pay. Benton Harbor’s per-pupil total General Fund revenues were $31,155 in 2022-23, compared to St. Joseph’s $12,528 and Troy’s $15,257.
