LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After the Democratic party in Michigan imploded last week which resulted in an early House adjournment and marathon Senate session, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed lame duck legislation into law on Monday.
Senate Bill 40, sponsored by state Senator Paul Wojno (D-Warren), extends unemployment benefits from 20 weeks to 26 weeks. Republicans denounced the bill calling it “corporate welfare.”

In addition, Senate Bill 740 requires journey and master plumbers to supervise no more than two apprentices at a time. Senator Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), sponsored that bill.
Finally, Senate Bills 982, 983, 984, and 1050 supports telephone companies in Michigan, according to Gov. Whitmer. It allows businesses to convert into a limited liability corporation (LLC) and “bring Michigan’s statutes up to speed with the rest of the country.” Those bi-partisan bills were sponsored by Senators Sam Singh (D-East Lansing), Dan Lauwers (R-Brockway), and Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing).
What’s also noteworthy is what Gov. Whitmer did not sign. Because of the breakdown in the Democratic majority, bills that pushed the party’s agenda died in the House. Those bills included mandates about gender identity and sexual orientation in sex ed class, driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, new taxes on gas, water, sports tickets, and fee increases for hunting and fishing licenses.
