Rep. Kildee announced last year that he would not be seeking reelection after a cancer diagnosis forced him to reassess every area of his life.

“It has been the honor of my life to serve mid-Michigan in Congress,” Rep. Kildee said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together, working with anyone—Republicans, Democrats or Independents—to just get things done for working people.”

Kildee shared his legacy report with constituents in a final email from his office. He mentions what he considers to be the highlights of his career. Those include the $170 million in aid delivered to Flint during the water crisis, the release of Americans unfairly detained abroad, capping the cost of insulin, and bringing federal funding back to his home district.

“Throughout my service, I have always focused on what I could do to make the lives of Michiganders better,” Kildee said. “Thank you for placing your trust in me to represent you.”

Public service is a tradition in Kildee’s family. Rep. Kildee carried on his family’s legacy in Flint-area politics after succeeding his uncle, Dale Kildee, who served 36 year in Congress.

Rep. Kildee’s seat will be filled by newly elected Kristen McDonald Rivet, a Democrat.
