GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – An April 28, 2025 trial date is on the docket for a former Grand Rapids police officer charged with second degree murder.

The fact that Christopher Schurr shot and killed 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya in April 2022 has never been disputed. What is at the center of the case is whether Schurr’s actions constituted murder. Schurr pulled over Lyoya that day because his vehicle and license plate did not match. Body camera footage shows Lyoya resisting arrest. Schurr said he feared for his life and Lyoya reached for his taser.

Later, toxicology tests revealed Lyoya’s blood alcohol level at three times the legal limit.

The trial date comes after the Michigan Supreme Court denied Schurr’s appeal in the case.

In addition, Lyoya’s family filed a civil lawsuit against Schurr and alleged excessive force.
