YPSILANTI, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Ypsilanti District Library announced this week it’s no longer going to post content on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Instead, the library added the platform Bluesky.

What is Bluesky?

Bluesky is a near clone of the old Twitter platform. The BBC reported that Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey “created” Bluesky. Time stated that Dorsey “helped fund and popularize it” before leaving his spot on Bluesky’s board.

Elon Musk, who endorsed President-elect Donald Trump, now owns X.

The library’s decision was made Nov. 18 and met by some claims on the library’s Facebook account that the decision was politically-motivated.

The decision is not based on politics.

Sam Killian, the library’s community relations coordinator, said he manages the library’s social media accounts and the decision wasn’t based on politics.

“We use Buffer to manage our social posts, and we can use 3 accounts. We’re still keeping the library account open on X, and if we see people on that platform letting us know that they want to see our news there, we will certainly rethink the plan,” Killian said in an email to Michigan News Source. “However, our engagement was not just ‘not great,’ but essentially non-existent. Our main goal is to make sure people see the things we share, and due to changing algorithms and other factors on X, people weren’t seeing our posts there anymore.”

Killian continued: “We switched to Bluesky when we saw the growth it was experiencing and thought it would be worth trying. Again, if it proves to be not fruitful for us, we will rethink it. However, in a few days on Bluesky, we’ve already had more engagement than almost the entire last year on X, and we’ve got more than a quarter of the followers that we have on X (which we joined in 2010). We certainly didn’t intend for this to be polarizing, as it was a decision based on maximizing the reach of our posts and time we have to spend on social media.”

Activity on Twitter/X.

The library joined X when it was called Twitter in 2010. It has 2,556 followers on X.

The library made on average one to two posts a day on X and those posts were viewed in general about 30 to 60 times.
