LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan State Police (MSP) want residents to be ready when disaster strikes. Their latest campaign, “Know Your Plan. Be Alert.,” is all about helping Michiganders stay informed and prepared during emergencies.
From November through February, the state is rolling out billboards and social media posts to encourage people to sign up for local emergency alerts.

Being prepared for emergencies is more than just gathering supplies for an emergency kit; it means knowing where to turn for accurate and up-to-date safety information when seconds count,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. “Signing up to receive emergency alerts is a critical part of emergency preparation and doing so will ensure that when an emergency happens, you are in the know with real-time accurate information.”
Why local alerts matter.
Local emergency alerts, often sent via text, provide critical updates during severe weather, active shooter situations, or when someone is missing or endangered. Managed by local emergency teams, these notifications are designed to give you location-specific information fast – when every second counts.
Grady adds, “These alerts are often the fastest way for emergency responders to communicate with residents. When minutes matter, these alerts can save lives.”
Reversing a dangerous trend.
Fewer people are signing up for emergency notifications, according to a recent National Preparedness Survey. The “Know Your Plan. Be Alert.” campaign aims to reverse this trend by making it easy for more Michiganders to connect with these vital resources. Signing up is simple: visit https://www.michigan.gov/miready/local-alerts to find your local alert system.
Be prepared before disaster strikes.
Beyond signing up for alerts, MSP encourages everyone to have a solid emergency plan. Learn more about how to prepare for emergencies by visiting https://www.michigan.gov/miready or following MSP on X (formerly Twitter) at @MichEMHS.
