TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Grand Traverse County Commissioner, Republican Brad Jewett, 55, admitted guilt to a charge of engaging services of prostitution, a misdemeanor carrying up to 93 days in jail.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the plea deal on Tuesday, November 12th, which dropped an additional charge of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime in exchange for his admission.

Undercover operation unmasked a public official.

Jewett’s arrest was the result of a targeted sting operation in June, led by a joint task force of multiple agencies including the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, Genesee Sheriff’s Office and Genesee County’s Human Oppression Strike Team (GHOST).

The Grand Traverse County Prosecutor referred the case to Attorney General Nessel’s office, given Jewett’s role as an elected official. The investigation, concluded in August, was spearheaded by the Michigan State Police and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.

AG Nessel says “no one is above the law.”

Following Jewett’s guilty plea, Attorney General Nessel, who many say has a habit of targeting Republicans, emphasized accountability, stating, “As this conviction demonstrates, no one is above the law. I commend the law enforcement joint task force for conducting this case with integrity. My department will continue to hold accountable those who engage in criminal activity, no matter their position.”

Vice Chairperson Jewett, who recently lost his re-election bid to a Democratic challenger, is awaiting sentencing with no court date set yet. His loss leaves the county with a slim Republican majority of 5-4.
