DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Momentum is building behind the movement to make Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player.

This week, The Sporting News, Washington Post, Yahoo Sports all did stories about Goff being in the running to win the league’s MVP. USA Today has Goff ranked second this week in its ranking of NFL MVP. The national newspaper has Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson as the favorite. The Associated Press sponsors the award which is selected by a nationwide panel of media.

Goff has led the Lions to a 7-1 record this season and has put together one of the most efficient passing seasons in the history of the NFL. Goff has completed 74.9% of his passes with 14 TDs and just four interceptions. Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints set the NFL single-season record for highest pass competition percentage at 74.4% in 2018.
The Lions only boast one MVP.
Barry Sanders is the only Detroit Lions to win the MVP. Sanders won the award in 1997 when he rushed for 2,053 yards and Detroit finished with a 9-7 record.
Goff’s name has become a rallying cry for the city.
Detroit Lions fans have made it a practice to break out in “Jared Goff” chants at events across the state. Chant of “Jared Goff” have been witnessed at Detroit Red Wings games, Detroit Pistons games, University of Michigan hockey games, minor league hockey games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, high school cheerleading competitions, Western Michigan University hockey games, ESPN Game Day telecasts as well as the NFL Draft in Detroit last April.
Lions’ fans even chanted “Jared Goff” when Detroit beat the Packers 24-14 on Nov. 3 at Green Bay’s Lambeau Field.
The Lions traded franchise quarterback Matt Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021 to get Goff.

The Rams won a Super Bowl in 2021 and the Lions went 3-13-1 After a dreadful 1-6 start in 2022, Goff slowly transitioned into one of the most efficient QBs in the league. In the last nine games of 2022, Goff threw 15 TDs and no interceptions.
Goff hasn’t received a single MVP vote in 2022 and 2023 during the rise of the Lions. In 2022, Goff made the Pro Bowl, but only as an alternative when Philadelphia QB Jalen Hurts was injured.
