With 20.52% of precincts reporting, Republican Tom Barrett is now ahead of Democratic Curtis Hertel with 62.3% of the vote vs. Hertel’s 34.2%.

Updated 8:40 PM ET – Democratic Curtis Hertel Ahead of Republican Tom Barrett in Early Reporting

With 7.23% of precincts reporting, Democratic Curtis Hertel currently holds a lead with 58.5% of the votes compared to Republican Tom Barrett with 38% according to reporting from the Detroit News. The seat was left open when U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin pursued her senate bid.

Republican Barrett (Charlotte) and Democratic Hertel (East Lansing) are both former state senators. The district includes Ingham, Livingston, Shiawassee, and Clinton counties, along with most of Eaton County and small sections of Oakland and Genesee counties. Key cities within the district are Lansing, East Lansing, St. Johns, Owosso, and Howell.
