BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The National Park Service has added locations to Underground Railroad sites, and two of those sites are in Battle Creek, Michigan.
The Freedom Program now features Perry Sanford’s grave in Oak Hill Cemetery and the Hussey House. Sanford was a self-emancipator who escaped enslavement in 1846 and settled in Battle Creek. The Hussey family assisted freedom seekers with food, shelter, and aid.

Battle Creek is also home to the Harriet Tubman monuments and the Sojourner Truth Memorial.
