MENOMINEE COUNTY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A former Menominee County Sheriff’s Deputy and school resource officer will spend to 40-60 months in prison.
Friday’s sentencing comes after Brian Helfert took a plea deal in July. He he pleaded no contest to one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The second count of the same charge was dismissed as part of the plea deal.

The charges, filed in 2022, stem from the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy during the 2017-2018 school year. According to the criminal complaint, Helfert worked as a school resource officer at Blesch Intermediate School at the time; the victim was a sixth-grade student.
This follows a trial that concluded in Dec. 2023, in which Helfert was found guilty of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a weapon. He was sentenced for that charge on March 7 to a minimum of nine years and a maximum of 15 in prison. Helfert was credited for 757 days already served on his sentence.
