HOWELL, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office will now track interactions with illegal aliens whether they are suspects, witnesses, victims, or drivers pulled over by law enforcement.

The Livingston County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the resolution on Monday after two hours of public comment. Livingston County Sheriff Michael Murphy previously said illegal aliens are impacting the area, just like in neighboring counties. However, in order for the data to be evaluated, it has to be tracked.

“We need to do better,” one resident told the Board of Commissioners during public comment at Monday night’s meeting. “You’re picking on the Vice President in this resolution” she said, referring to Vice President Kamala Harris’ role as “border czar.” Harris has since denied she was ever the “border czar” under President Joe Biden.

Another resident called on the commissioners to give a voice to the public. “As citizens, we are asking our elected officials to stand in the gap and not allow this to escalate,” he said. “This resolution gives us a mechanism to better understand what is going on in our county. We don’t know what we don’t know.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) condemned the resolution and said it “fosters division.” It issued a statement following its approval: “We are deeply concerned about the passage of a resolution in Livingston County that, with the cooperation of the Sheriff’s Department, formalizes a plan to have law enforcement target immigrants who live and work in the county.” In addition, “Our neighborhood associations, parks, and places of worship do not discriminate on the basis of immigration status, and neither should our county government.”
