LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan is predicted to be a major battleground state in the November election, but the Michigan GOP hasn’t received the memo. This move leaves some wondering about the party’s current strategy.

On the same day that former President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Flint and running mate JD Vance stops by Sparta, the Michigan Republican Party said it is releasing a radio featuring former convicted Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Officials said the ad will run in the Detroit market for the next two weeks.

At the beginning of the ad, Kilpatrick mentions, “I had to challenge everything that I used to espouse” from abortion to morality and identity politics. “For us, this election is about the survival of our nation.”

Kilpatrick’s swing to the other side of the aisle isn’t new. The former Democrat and convicted felon received a commuted sentence from then President Donald Trump in 2021. Last month, Kilpatrick spoke at an Oakland County Republican fundraiser.

In 2013, a federal judge sentenced Kilpatrick to a 28-year prison term for his role in a racketeering conspiracy that included extortion, bribery, and fraud. He still owes more than $1 million in restitution and continues to live a lavish lifestyle.
