DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – It wasn’t what Dan Campbell scripted for the second home game of the year as Detroit dropped a heartbreaker to Tampa Bay, 20-16.

Campbell says, “I asked the team to improve and they improved, but the coach cost them the game. It is a massive error on my part. I messed up.”

His comments come from the first half when he put both the offensive and special teams units on the field at the same time that drew a flag. That flag ran off the remaining time in the half and cost Detroit a field goal attempt that would have drawn them within four.

The offense finished with 463 yards as Jared Goff threw for 307 yards but had no touchdowns and two interceptions. David Montgomery added one rushing touchdown and Jake Bates had three field goals of 22, 32, and 35 yards.

Montgomery put the Lions up, 16-13, on a one-yard run with 3:26 to go in the third quarter. Tampa Bay scored on the ensuing drive, moving ahead, 20-16. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Detroit’s possessions went punt, interception, and two turnover on downs. The final two possessions went into Tampa Bay territory with the third possession ending at the 11-yard line. Detroit’s last chance ended with three incomplete passes from Goff at the Tampa Bay 26-yard line.

Detroit was 1-of-7 in the red zone on the day. Goff says, “That’s ultimately the difference in the game. If we score a couple touchdowns down there, we probably win the game.”

Next week, Detroit travels to Arizona to face the Cardinals at 4:25 p.m.
