LAPEER, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Rep. Elissa Slotkin, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate who previously signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) regarding a Chinese megasite in Big Rapids, now says she opposes the plant being built.

PoliticoPro reports that Slotkin said the economic and “national security implications of Chinese-affiliated companies” must be considered. She commented about the project after a campaign event in Lapeer.

“To me, until there’s a national security vetting, I don’t love the idea of moving forward on any project or any sale of farmland,” Slotkin said, referring to the parcels of land in Green Charter Township where the electric vehicle plant is being constructed.

Slotkin changed her mind after previously signing a NDA about the project. Her opponent, former GOP Congressman Mike Rogers, has continued to link her to the Chinese-backed plant. Recently, Republican Vice President candidate JD Vance visited a crowd near the Gotion site and pushed back on Democrats support of such a project.

The Gotion project, along with the Ford BlueOval project in Marshall, and two megasite projects in Clinton County and Genesee County, have been pet projects of Governor Gretchen Whitmer and her sidekick, the Michigan Department of Economic Development.
