OWOSSO, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A Shiawassee County hospital is the first in the state to administer a new Alzheimer’s treatment.
Memorial Healthcare in Owosso says five patients are set to undergo a new drug treatment for the disease. The drug aims to slow down the decline in memory and thinking abilities.
Medicare is expected to provide coverage for the drug. The FDA approved the drug based off a late-stage clinical trial of 1,700 people. It showed the drug slowed the progression of the disease by 35% after 18 months.
The Alzheimer’s Association estimates 6.7 million people 65 and older are living with the disease. That number is projected to grow to 13.6 million by 2060.
