DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Shortstop Javier Baez will have season-ending right hip surgery most likely next week as the Tigers sort through the details. Baez was put on the 10-day injured list on Friday and three days later transferred to the 60-day injured list before Monday’s decision for the surgery. He was first put on the 10-day injured list for lumbar spine and hip inflammation.
“Getting him healthy is the No. 1 priority, for his own health, and obviously, to get the best player out of him, we need him healthy. It’s no doubt that I’s been a really tough stretch for him in his career and really tough stretch as a Tiger, but it doesn’t mean that it can’t change,” said manager A.J. Hinch. “We’ve got to get him right. It’ll be along process, but hopefully, it’ll be a successful one.”

Through 80 games this year, Baez has hit just .184 with six home runs striking out 69 times. He is in his third year of a six-year, $140 million contract. He came to the Tigers from the Cubs in a 2021 trade. The former star Cubbie played eight years in Chicago after being their No. 9 pick in 2011. The two-time All-Star was a Silver Slugger in 2018, won a Gold Glove in 2020, and a member of the 2016 World Series Championship team.
Baez said about coming back to Chicago this past week, “It’s always special to be here. One of my kids was born here, so I can call it home. I grew up with this organization. Everything started from Arizona, being over there 11 years with this organization in spring training. It feels great. I went around the city and walked around.”
He is under contract with the Tigers through 2027.
