LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Former Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson penned some tough words for current Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, calling her “partisan” for using the office for her own party’s political gain.

Johnson’s op-ed piece.

In Johnson’s op-ed piece published last Friday in The Detroit News, she condemned Benson for investigating Elon Musk and his America PAC over allegedly collecting data on potential voters.

Johnson wrote, “Benson, however, didn’t seem so concerned about what data was being collected when she personally worked with ‘Rock the Vote’ to allow them to do the exact same thing. In fact, she even bragged about their partnership in an official press release.”

In addition, Johnson suggested Benson quit investigating groups that register people to vote who may not align their ballot with her preferred party, and instead recommended Benson’s office “better focus its attention on cleaning up names that should no longer be in our state’s qualified voter file — such as those who have died or who no longer live in Michigan.”

Benson’s voter rolls still contain dead people.

But cleaning up the voter rolls is not a priority for Benson. She faced two lawsuits over leaving dead and outdated voters on the rolls, and is currently facing a potential lawsuit from the Republican National Committee over trying to kickstart new voting laws into starting early. Those laws essentially keep voter fraud from being investigated.

Johnson pulled the veil off Benson’s “voter ID” doublespeak, and explained that voter-enacted Proposal 2 did not simply enshrine “voter ID requirements” into Michigan’s Constitution.

Johnson says the role of SOS should be “impartial.”

Johnson reflected on her time as Michigan’s secretary of state, and stated she “took impartiality in that role very seriously.” She mentioned it is alarming to see Benson looking into a conservative group yet helping potential Democrat voters do the same thing.

“My advice for Musk would be to not worry too much,” Johnson wrote. “Considering Benson is a Harvard law graduate, her track record in following the law herself is actually pretty abysmal.”
