DETROIT, Mich. (Michigan News Source)McDonald’s of Michigan is serving up a crispy deal for Detroit Lions fans and it’s fresh out of the fryer. Every time the Lions‘ defense picks off a pass, you could score free fries at participating McDonald’s statewide. Any size, any game – even preseason, regular season, and playoffs – because nothing tastes better than victory fries!

Yes, you heard that right – your beloved Lions just have to catch the football as it’s whizzing by towards their competition, and you’ll get to enjoy some of those golden, salty delights.

But before you get too excited and think that you’ll be snacking on fries every week, let’s take a look at the Lions’ track record last season and see how you would have fared. Spoiler alert: you might want to stock up on ketchup now because things looked pretty good during the Lions’ 2023-24 football season.

Overall, in their 2023-24 football season, the Lions had 23 defensive interceptions in all of their games: 4 in preseason, 16 during regular season and 3 in postseason. The top interceptors were Safety Kerby Joseph (4), DB Brian Branch (3), former Lion CB Jerry Jacobs (3) and Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (2). So it’s probably a good idea to keep an eye on Joseph and Branch if you want to be swimming in fries.

The nitty gritty of the deal and how many fries you could be scoring…

So let’s say on the conservative side that there are about 75 fries in a large McDonald’s box of fries because the sizes of the fries vary and so does the amount your stingy local McDonald’s employee is willing to dish out. Multiply that by the 20 preseason and regular season games that the Lions have scheduled for this year’s football season and that’s approximately 1,500 “free” fries for you!

In order to get your free fries, you have to follow a few rules for their promotion. First of all, you have to download the McDonald’s app and opt into the rewards. You also have to make an additional purchase of at least $1.00. So, you’ll still be shelling out some dough, even if the fries are technically “free.” And the offer excludes tax – because the government still needs their piece of the potato.

You also have a time limit. You have to snag your french fry deal within 48 hours beginning the day after the interception. And the offer is valid for only one time per user for each game that there is an interception.

In their first preseason game on Thursday against the New York Giants, the Lions unfortunately lost 3-14 but Safety Brandon Joseph had an interception – so time is of the essence to download your McDonald’s app and start downloading the fries into your stomach ASAP.

With approximately 550 McDonald’s locations in Michigan, there should be a lot of opportunities to participate in the promotion, however, only participating restaurants are involved in the promo, so check your app or maybe call ahead before you head over to the Golden Arches snag your salty golden potato sticks. Of course, you can always just show up and ask because there’s probably something you need to pick up anyway like a vanilla shake or some chicken nuggets.

Michigan News Source contacted the Schulz Org, which operates 36 locations across west and northern Michigan and holds the title of the largest McDonald’s franchisee in the state. Unfortunately, according to their administrative director, Lita Fisher, they’ll be skipping the promotion. But hey, that still leaves 514 other Michigan McDonald’s to explore!

Why are the McDonald’s fries so yummy?

McDonald’s world-famous fries, crafted from top-tier potatoes like the Russet Burbank and Shepody, are crispy and golden on the outside with a fluffy interior, delighting snack fans all over the planet. With 0g of trans fat per labeled serving, these fries are as epic as they are delicious – but let’s be honest, you already knew that.

The McD’s website also describes the process of potato to purchaser: “The suppliers we work with first peel, cut and blanche the potatoes. They then dry, partially fry and quickly freeze the fries for our restaurants. Once in our kitchens, we cook them in our canola-blend oil so you can have them crispy and hot – just the way you like them.”

On the “Taste of Homewebsite, they try to figure out the scientific reason why the fries are so good. They narrow it down to the oil, salt, sugar and potatoes.

In describing the experience of eating them, Taste of Home says, “You grip that iconic red box with the famous arches on the front, holding a generous handful of stiff golden sticks. Then you take the first bite and hear that satisfying crunch through the crispy outer layer, with the salt so discernible you can feel it leaping onto your tongue. And then the fluffy, soft inside: some magical combination of potato that manages to taste a million times better than any fries you’ve had before. They’re warm and satisfying, and you polish them off one by one. Before you know it, the whole box is gone.”

Hungry anyone?

McDonald’s dishes out an estimated 9 million pounds of french fries daily in the U.S. alone. Stretch that out over a year, and you’re looking at a whopping 3.3 billion pounds of crispy goodness. With their new promotion featuring the Detroit Lions and a promising season ahead, it’s up to the Lions players to boost those numbers and turn those fries into a touchdown – or should we say, a potato victory.
