ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – As the 2024 Summer Olympics start this week in Paris, the University of Michigan will have 50 people tied to the games. This includes over 42 athletes and eight coaches from 22 different countries. The countries represented will be the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Serbia, Austria, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, South Africa, Syria, and United Arab Emirates.

Of the 42 athletes, there are 11 that were at Michigan this past year. Paul Juda and Lais Najjar (men’s gymnastics), Savannah Sutherland (women’s track), Dubem Amene (men’s track), Austin Gomez (wrestling), Yousuf Al-Matrooshi, Eitan Ben-Shitrit, and Gal Groumi (men’s swimming), Stephanie Balduccini and Natalie Kan (women’s swimming) all competed this past year for Michigan.

Wrestling, volleyball, and men’s gymnastics will have coaches from Michigan. Sean Bormet will help with wrestling, Erin Virtue in volleyball, and Yuan Xiao in men’s gymnastics.

Men’s swimming will have the most representation with nine athletes. After current swimmers Al-Matrooshi (United Arab Emirates), Ben-Shitrit (Israel), and Groumi (Israel), there are six other that will participate in Nikola Acin (Serbia), Felix Aubock (Austria), Jon Jontvedt (Norway), Eduardo Moraes (Brazil), Charlie Swanson (USA), and Lorne Wigginton (Canada). Both Jontvedt and Wigginton are incoming freshmen.

Wrestling is the next closest with five participants and three coaches.
