Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. While healthy individuals might experience only short-term symptoms such as high fever or severe headache, the FDA warns that listeria can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recalled products were distributed nationwide, available both in retail locations and via direct delivery. Following the FDA’s discovery of listeria in routine product sampling, Totally Cool, Inc. has halted production and distribution of the affected products. The company is continuing its investigation and implementing measures to address the issue.
Fortunately, no other products from Totally Cool, Inc. are affected by this recall, and no illnesses have been reported to date.
Michigan consumers are advised to check their ice cream products against the recall list. If you have any of the recalled items, dispose of them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
