Places like Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore or Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offer breathtaking views and ample opportunities for adventure.

Check out events like the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City or the Bay City Fireworks Festival for a taste of local culture and community spirit.

Fireworks spectaculars and safety tips:

No Fourth of July celebration is complete without fireworks, but it’s crucial to enjoy them safely. Here are some tips to ensure a fun and incident-free fireworks experience:

1. Attend Public Displays: Leave fireworks to the professionals and attend one of the many public fireworks displays hosted throughout Michigan. Notable displays include those at Detroit’s Riverfront, Grand Rapids’ Ah-Nab-Awen Park (July 6th), or Traverse City’s Open Space Park. These events not only showcase dazzling pyrotechnics but also adhere to strict safety regulations.

2. Follow Local Laws: If you plan to use fireworks at home, familiarize yourself with Michigan’s fireworks laws and regulations. Purchase fireworks only from licensed vendors and use them in designated areas away from buildings, dry grass, or other flammable materials. And follow the days and times you are allowed to shoot them off. Don’t annoy your neighbors any more than usual.

3. Supervise Children: Keep children and pets at a safe distance from fireworks at all times. Consider using glow sticks or other safe alternatives to keep younger ones entertained.

And while we’re speaking of pets, July 4th is the number one day that pets go missing. They get scared by all of the noise and the fireworks and the visiting people in their homes. Keep your pets indoors, locked away and safe during all of the hustle and bustle!

4. Dispose of Fireworks Properly: After the festivities, ensure fireworks are completely extinguished and disposed of properly. Soak used fireworks in water before placing them in a metal trash can away from any buildings or combustible materials.

Celebrate, but do it safely.

This Fourth of July, Michigan offers endless opportunities for fun and celebration while prioritizing safety, especially when it comes to fireworks. Whether you’re enjoying a beach day, exploring nature, or marveling at a fireworks display, remember to stay informed about local regulations and prioritize the well-being of yourself, your pets and others. By celebrating responsibly, you can make this Independence Day weekend memorable, patriotic and safe for everyone.
