LIVONIA, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A 2-year-old is dead and his mother is recovering in the hospital after officials say a “pop up” storm turned into an EF-1 tornado and ripped through Livonia on Wednesday afternoon.

The toddler died when a tree fell onto the house and landed in the bedroom where he and his mother were lying in bed. The tree pinned both. Crew worked for an hour to remove the tree and used pressure lifting air bags to free both victims.

The toddler’s 2-week-old sibling was in a second bedroom with the grandmother. Crews took them to the hospital for an evaluation.

Due to the nature of the “pop up” storm, officials could not issue warnings or sound sirens.

The National Weather Service (NWS) will survey the area.

In addition, the storm downed multiple trees and knocked out power.
