CADILLAC, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A man acquitted of having a supporting role in the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is running for Wexford County Sheriff.

Eric Molitor, a Republican, filed papers to run against fellow GOP contender and Wexford County Sheriff Trent Taylor in the August’s primary election.

Molitor said his main platform hinges on not enforcing a new state law that can take guns away from people who are alleged to be a danger to themselves or others.

Molitor and two other men were found not guilty of providing support for a terrorist act. They were accused of supporting leaders of the kidnap plot by participating in military-style drills and traveling to see Whitmer’s vacation home in 2020. The said the “plot” was a set up by the government, informants, and undercover FBI agents.

Five men were acquitted in the case, while nine were convicted or entered guilty pleas.
