DEARBORN, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Biden administration has denounced the “death to America” chants that erupted last weekend at an International Al-Quds Day rally in Dearborn, but Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Palestinian Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) refuse to comment on the hate-speech wafting through their own backyard.

Video of the rally shows activist Tarek Bazzi whipping up the crowd with anti-semitic speech over Israel’s response to Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attacks. Muslims set aside Al-Quds Day on the last Friday of Ramadan to support Palestine.

“Peaceful protests are something that the president has also been very clear that, its important to give folks space to peacefully protest. But any type of violent rhetoric, we are going to denounce,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Dearborn boasts a large population of Arab-Americans. Mayor Abdullah Hammoud posted a statement on social media saying, “the hateful rhetoric heard on Friday does not reflect the opinion of the members of this community.”

Over the weekend, video emerged of a rally in Dearborn where some attendees were chanting statements that were unacceptable and contrary to the heart of this city. We reject all inflammatory and violent statements made at the gathering.

In February, Gov. Whitmer was quick to call a Wall Street Journal article a “total misrepresentation of an important city” after it published a piece calling Dearborn “America’s Jihad Capital.”

Rep. Tlaib, the only Palestinian in Congress, has been outspoken with antisemitic comments, but had not commented on what happened at the rally.
