LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – It looks like Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s quest to “fix the damn roads” might come at a high price to Michigan drivers.

Misplaced priorities stop Michigan’s roads and bridges from being repaired.

Even though the state has been handing out grants left and right, tens of millions at a time in fact, to support everything from illegal immigrant refugee centers to volunteer service, they claim that they just don’t have enough of your taxpayer money to fix our roads and bridges. It’s an amount that “experts” say is a $4 billion annual gap.

So the wizards of smart in our state House are dusting off their old road atlas and conspiring for a way to get more “new” money. Their GPS navigation has led a state House budget committee to listen to testimony for the past two weeks from advocates of “alternative” road funding options according to Bridge Michigan.

Some of those advocates include the authors of the spine tingling pieces of feasibility and implementation literature called the “Michigan Statewide Tolling Study.”

In their two studies, they looked at 31 highways in Michigan and found 14 that could become toll roads. Those locations include large portions of the busy and well-traveled Interstates 75, 94 and 96.

Nothing says “welcome to Michigan” like a toll booth.

What exactly are the alternatives that your genius representatives are looking at? Two of the top contenders that your trusty politicians have come up with are charging you per mile that you drive – or coming up with some sort of toll road system.

Will this actually fix our pothole-riddled roads? You know it won’t. Will this actually reduce your gas taxes? You know it won’t. But they’ll probably tell us it will as they tax and spend us out of existence.

These additional revenues are desperately being looked at mostly because of the Democrats’ push to have us all drive electric vehicles. If you’re driving an EV, you’re obviously not buying gas and if you aren’t buying gas, the state isn’t getting their gas tax money from you.

So although you feel like you are being a good citizen by buying your EV, your politicians will punish you for it because they have to make sure they don’t lose any of your gas tax money they have become accustomed to.

Lawmakers don’t have to answer for their ineptness.

And what kind of accountability do these politicians have when they DON’T do what they say they will do or the roads and bridges don’t get fixed, regardless of their budgets? There is none. No one ever gets fired or put in prison for accidents caused by their ineptness. Just like nothing happened to them when people died after they messed with no-fault auto insurance legislation.

So as the cost of patching up Michigan’s transportation mess skyrockets, and the states’ coffers shrink because of EVs, legislators are scrambling to come up with ways to fix the state’s crumbling infrastructure and their answer (no surprise) is for us to pay for their inadequacies.

Stealing more of our money always seems to be their answer for everything – instead of actually being good stewards of the money they have already confiscated from us.

Yes, our roads are in dire straits – so much so that our potholes have potholes. Yes, repairs to our roads and bridges are needed. But the politicians in charge don’t seem to have the answers. If they did, the problem would have been fixed long ago.

The governor’s Growing Michigan Together Council appears to be on board with many of the road funding suggestions and have urged lawmakers to consider new options that includes tolling, charging per mile and “better utilization of public-private partnerships” whatever that means.

So let’s talk tolls – which lights up the eyes of every greedy politician.
