LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Who knew crime-fighting could look so good? Michigan’s state troopers have garnered national attention for their stylish uniforms, recently earning the 17th spot in a ranking of the sexiest state police outfits conducted by Wealth of Geeks, a gaming, pop culture and finance website.
Who voted and what makes the uniforms stand out?
The ranking, based on the votes of 3,000 Americans, celebrates Michigan State Police’s distinctive uniform, highlighting its striking navy blue shirts, practical yet stylish trousers, and the pièce de résistance – the campaign hat tilted with the flair of a Motown legend, according to Wealth of Geeks.

First Lt. Mike Shaw from the MSP Second District acknowledged to WWJ Newsradio 950 radio the 17th position but staunchly argued that Michigan’s troopers boast the very best uniforms.
Shaw emphasized the uniqueness of the MSP uniforms, distinguishing them from the prevailing trend of softer hats, lack of ties, and fatigues in other departments. Hailing from a military background, Shaw expressed immense pride in Michigan’s uniform, noting that citizens often commend their distinctive attire and patrol cars, especially during travel.
A case for Michigan State Police deserving a higher ranking.
Although the Texas Department of Public Safety secured the top spot as the “sexiest” in the U.S. with their renowned “Texas Tan” uniforms and cowboy hats, Shaw argued that Michigan’s uniforms are equally, if not more, distinctive, highlighting that Michigan’s uniforms stand out in contrast to the prevailing styles seen in other states.
Shaw revealed that the uniform’s color had seen slight variations over the years due to different manufacturers, but the current navy blue has been a constant since he first wore the uniform. The hue is so well-received that MSP patrol cars are painted in the same shade to enhance visibility and maintain a cohesive appearance.
Officers take pride in looking their best.
Michigan State Police take meticulous care of their uniforms, providing each trooper with outfits at no personal cost. Shaw underscored that any wear or damage is promptly addressed, ensuring that their uniforms consistently look impeccable.
Ohio above Michigan? How did that happen?
In a lighthearted comment, Shaw responded to the Ohio State Highway Patrol ranking two spots higher, suggesting humorously that they may have manipulated the ballot. Despite the friendly rivalry, Shaw confidently asserted that Michigan State Police uniforms surpass those of Ohio and that MSP is “always going to be anything better than what comes out of Ohio.”

The overall ranking placed Michigan at 17, alongside Texas, New Hampshire, and Missouri in the top three. Michael Dinich from Wealth of Geeks pointed out that it’s not just about the uniforms though. It’s also about the individuals who wear them with pride and style, emphasizing that these uniforms represent the embodiment of the states they belong to and the officers who wear them.
Shaw concurred, noting that the term “sexy” isn’t commonly associated with law enforcement, but he welcomed the acknowledgment, stating that 17 is better than 50. According to him, any Michigander would naturally affirm that their uniform deserves the top spot. And definitely above Ohio.
Michigan State Police responds to top ranking:
