EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State University (MSU) President Kevin Guskiewicz starts his tenure at the helm of the East Lansing school on Monday, and he must tackle a plethora of ongoing challenges right off the bat.
Guskiewicz joins MSU as the Board of Trustees is in the midst of a potential shake up. Rema Vassar resigned as chair on Sunday night right before a late night meeting. Last week, an independent investigation revealed that Vassar and fellow trustee Dennis Denno bullied colleagues and interfered in school business. In addition, Trustee Brianna Scott has been censured.

Both Vassar and Denno will remain on the board for now. However, since they are elected officials, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer must review the report and determine whether or not to remove them from their positions. In the meantime, Guskiewicz will work closely with Trustees Dan Kelly and Kelly Tebay who will handle chair and vice chair duties, respectively.
In addition, Giskiewicz will navigate the continuing fallout from the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal and MSU’s handling of the investigation. After years of stonewalling and claiming “attorney-client privilege,” MSU finally started turning over requested documents to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel last Friday. The Board said it plans to have all 6,000 requested pages turned over by the end of the month, though much of it is expected to be heavily redacted.
Before becoming a Spartan, Guskiewicz spent nearly three decades at UNC-Chapel Hill. He will make $975,000 per year at MSU.
