LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A new scholarship program has launched in Michigan designed to give scholarship money to the descendants of slaves.

The Justice League of Greater Lansing Michigan announced it is accepting applications for its Reparations Scholarship Program. The group said the $50,000 in scholarships is the first distribution of the League’s Reparations Fund designed to “address the racial wealth gap in Greater Lansing.”

The $50,000 will be divided between ten high school seniors who are descendants of enslaved African Americans who reside in Ingham, Eaton or Clinton counties. The scholarship money can be used at an accredited college, university or vocational school.

The Justice League of Greater Lansing describes itself as “a faith-based model of reparations.” Although the Justice League says it builds relationships to “close the racial wealth gap that exists between Black and white residents” the group admits it wants to see wealth increase among descendants of black slaves.

The application deadline is Monday, April 15, 2024. More information can be found here.
