GRAND BLANC, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – 2024 has brought good luck to a Grand Blanc Powerball lottery ticket buyer who won the jackpot of $842 million.

“The winning numbers in the Monday, Jan. 1 drawing were white balls 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 and red Powerball 1. The Power Play® multiplier was 3X,” according to a statement from Powerball.

Drew Svitko, Powerball Product Group Chair and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director shared his enthusiasm for the results and what it could mean for charities.

How is this win historic?

This lottery winner was historic in several ways including the first time it has been won on New Year’s Day since 1992, the inaugural year of the games. Moreover, it is the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot and tenth largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever won according to Powerball. 

The Acting Michigan Lottery Commissioner, Jessica Weare, shared the following comment regarding the latest jackpot award. 

“A lucky Michigan Lottery player woke up to life-changing news this morning after winning the $842.4 million Powerball jackpot on New Year’s Day!” said Weare in a statement. “Jackpots like this also help local businesses, and ticket sales benefit Michigan’s public schools.” 

The retailer wins big, too.

According to Weare, Food Castle of Grand Blanc sold the winning ticket and will receive a $50,000 bonus commission.

“This Powerball jackpot run, which began in October, helps the Lottery fulfill its mission of maximizing revenues to support public education in Michigan,” added Weare. “Last month, the Lottery announced a contribution of more than $1.3 billion to the School Aid Fund for Fiscal Year 2023, which was the fifth consecutive year Lottery contributed more than $1 billion to benefit schools.”
