SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The United States Coast Guard Station in Sault Ste. Marie is will wrap up 2023 with a name change.

It’ been known as Sector Sault Ste. Marie since 2005, but as of Friday, the station will be renamed “Sector Northern Great Lakes.”

Authorities said, “By renaming these sector commands, we are emphasizing the entirety of their respective areas of responsibility in recognition of what is most important to the Great Lakes maritime community that we serve.”

The command is on the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie. It’s the operational and administrative commander of 11 subordinate field units, which include 8 multi-mission small boat stations, one marine safety unit, and two aids-to-navigation teams.

The sector is the home of Vessel Traffic Service St. Marys River and Operation Taconite, the Coast Guard’s largest domestic icebreaking operation.

The station oversees the area that encompasses all of Lake Superior, northern sections of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, as well as all surrounding navigable waterways.
