SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A Whitefish Township volunteer fire department member in Chippewa County has been charged with 3rd degree arson for allegedly setting a fire in Paradise on Saturday night.

Thirty-five-year-old Joseph Halder has been arraigned on the charges related to the fire at the former Ruth’s Gift Shop in downtown Paradise, along with two others fires in the area. The judge gave Halder a $200,000 bond.

Chippewa County officials used surveillance footage from a gas station located across the street from the fire to piece together the timeline of events. They arrested Halder while he fought the fire.
