GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Former Republican Congressman Peter Meijer, who recently announced his bid to replace retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow in the U.S. Senate, is using an old logo from his family’s grocery store chain to promote his candidacy.

The logo was originally developed by Meijer Grocery to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 1984 and was used until 2004. Peter Meijer worked briefly for the superstore company, which is owned by members of his family, stocking shelves and collecting carts.

Peter Meijer’s version of the logo removes some of the color and adds a line under the name.

Internet users were quick to pick up on the joke.

“Don’t drag your grandfather’s company down with you … Ditch the logo,” a Twitter user wrote under Peter Meijer’s campaign announcement.

“People in Michigan like the Meijer’s stores,” wrote another user on a Reddit discussion board. “But I wonder if the current store management wants Peter to further politicize their brand.”

During Peter Meijer’s time in Congress, Meijer Grocery faced a barrage of politically charged comments online after Peter Meijer crossed party lines in a vote to impeach then-President Donald Trump.

Peter Meijer’s candidacy is one of nearly a dozen Republicans seeking the soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat.
