LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Attorney General’s office has obtained a search warrant to investigate legal defense fundraising for Republicans charged with posing as electors during the 2020 election.

The most publicized fundraiser, organized by the Michigan Conservative Coalition, is being held on a site called GiveSendGo, a Christian organization that promotes free fundraising with nonrestrictive policies. The fund has gathered over $150,000 and has received more than 2,000 donations.

In a three-page search warrant, GiveSendGo was asked to hand over information on contributions, bank routing numbers, and communications.  The organization responded to a request for comment but did not explicitly confirm that it had received the warrant or that it had complied.

“As for … the supposed search warrant: our official stance is that we value the privacy of our community highly,” a representative of GiveSendGo told Michigan News Source. “We have not complied with any illegal search warrants, viewing them as overreaches and invasions of privacy. We’re committed to challenging and resisting any demands that compromise the privacy and trust of our users.”

Recent donors have left comments on the fundraiser, calling Dana Nessel “tyrannical” and an “EVIL WOMAN” (sic) and thanking GiveSendGo for withholding donor personal information.

GiveSendGo has hosted other controversial fundraisers, including legal defense funds for Proud Boys member Nick Ochs, who was arrested and charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot, and Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted in a trial that sparked extensive debate over gun rights.

One of the fake electors reached a deal with prosecutors earlier this month, promising to provide “complete and truthful testimony” in exchange for dismissal of his case. Fifteen defendants are still being charged, including current and former state GOP officials. All have pled not guilty.
